my thoughts on gorillaz
Gorillaz. The cartoon band I guess we all have heard before. I began listening to them maybe 5 months ago (properly though) after a friend told me about them. I had actually heard a few of the songs before, and I just immediately got hooked. I really enjoy listening to them. Yet it's not just that. I love the whole idea of a band that doesn't exist in real life. It is so cool, and there's actually a whole lotta lore out there, through the different phases, the different characters and all that. The way the art style changes, the different portrayals of the characters. Another thing that always intrigues me is how the music is always different. There's no 1 genre. So unique. Anyhow, here's my take on the band.
The lore
A central and main part of the band, something that hooks not just music listeners, is the lore. Online, there are certain videos that are hours long, just of them talking about Gorillaz. I thought I might give you a quick run down of the lore anyways.
real lore
Basically theres this weird guy called Murdoc and he plays bass. He tries to start a band a few times, and the thing is he kinda sucks at singing. Kinda meaning he most certainly does. So hes driving one day to a store to rob it, when he crashes into it, and fractures the eye of Stuart, a person working there. So Murdoc is punished with community service, and is forced to look after Stuart, as a result. Later, while Murdoc was driving crazily in the car park, Stuart flies through the windowshield and fractures his other eye. Impressed by the look, Murdoc renmames him 2d and invites him to play in his band.
They Find Russel, a guy from the United States in a record store. This guy actually is possessed by the spirits of his dead friends who were killed in a drive by shooting in Soho (If you're intrigued search it up). They recruit him as a drummer. Now they originally have 2d's girlfriend as the guitarist, but after she was caught making out with Murdoc, Russel kicked her out. They set an advertisement in the newspaper, and a few weeks later a fedex box arrives on the doorstep. Out pops a young japanese girl who was a prodigy at the guitar, and they name her noodle (theres seriously way more lore to this if you wanna know research it). Thats the origin.
Now there are way more phases and all that stuff but it would take way too long for me to put it all down, but just from the story of how they came together, i'm sure you understand how cool it all is and why it's appealing. Sometimes I think they should create like an adult animation show on the entirety of Gorillaz lore, maybe make it slightly musical like hazbin hotel or something.
Just a note
If you didn't know already, the band was created by musical artist Damon Albarn (also founder of blur, british rock band), and artist Jamie Hewlett.
The music
The music that they create is actually peak. So great. With the release of each new album, you can never know what to expect. From hip hop, to electronic, to indie rock. This is why I reckon gorillaz is for everyone. There's gotta be something of theirs that you really like.
Favourite songs
I have no "favourite" but here are some of the songs I like more.
- On Melancholy Hill
- The Happy Dictator
- Humility
- 19-2000

So.. yeah. That's my view on Gorillaz. Bye.
